Name: Maria Satterwhite
Nickname: None
Age: 45
Marital Status: Married to Brian for 22 years!
Have been skating for how long:I roller-skated as a kid from ages 5-15 and began inline skating in college,
which was about 25 years ago, so I guess I've been skating about 35 years total
Equipment Brand and Type: Rollerblade inlines fit my wide feet the best. My current skates are Rollerblade Macroblades with 100mm wheels
Life Philosophies: Life's a dance, you learn as you go.
Favorite Time of Day to Skate: Morning before it gets hot, or any time it's below 80 degrees.
Favorite Skating Event: HCIC yearly outing to the Walnut Creek Trail, although I did my first full moon skate and that was pretty cool too
Awards/Competitive Wins: None, but I hope to do the North Shore Inline Marathon in the next couple years, as I have family in Duluth, MN.
Most Memorable Incident: I had a big wipe-out in June 2011. Luckily no bones were broken, just major road rash and a hand laceration that made life difficult for a while. I started wearing knee pads after that!
What do you get from Skating: I skate because I enjoy the workout. I get to go faster and farther than running, and it's easier on my joints. I like the time outdoors and usually skate by myself with one earbud in to listen to my favorite pump-up tunes.
Would like to do this Year in Skating: I would like to train up to a marathon, or at least get closer to it. I have worked up to 16-17 miles now, so there's a ways to go!
Coolest Accomplishment: I am extremely proud of my sons, Holden (16) and Max (11). They're pretty cool kids!
Other Sports/Hobbies you Enjoy: I have degrees in music and sing professionally outside of my teaching gig. I also love to dance!
Favorite skating gadget/tool:My Camelbak hydration pack makes it possible for me to go long distances
What do you enjoy about being a member of HCIC: Having other skaters to hang out with. There don't seem to be too many, so it's cool to find a "crew."
Mentors: Outside of the neighbor girl that taught me how to skate when I was 5, I've kinda done the skating thing on my own until I joined HCIC. This group has been a great resource in shopping for equipment and finding great places to skate.
Helpful advice to other skaters/ Beginners: Invest in decent skates. Cheap skates (haha-cheapskates!) aren't fun. Check out Inline Warehouse clearances-you can find last season's skates for a good price.
Favorite quote: "Music is a kind and truthful speech in a language out of mere words reach."
