March Skater of the Month

Name: Randy Williamson

Nickname: Barbarian

Age: 59

Marital Status: Single and Lovin It!

Have been skating for how long: I skated as a child and then rediscovered it about 20 years ago to stay toned for snow skiing. I had to give up skiing but kept on skating!

Equipment Brand and Type: I have graduated to Powerslide inline speed skates, which are still faster than I am!

Life Philosophy: Enjoy life. This is not a dress rehearsal!

Favorite Time of Day to Skate: I skate once a week at Playland Skate Center on adult night for about three hours for the fun of it but also for the exercise. My doctor recently said it was probably why I am in great physical shape at almost 60 years old.

Favorite Skating Events: I love the Texas Road Rash marathon, which I do in my viking garb, just for fun! I also skate in the Houston Art Car parade in garb, just for fun! I have viking garb because I attend the Texas Renaissance Festival near Houston and also the Sherwood Forest Faire near Elgin. Our camp is called Valhalla and we camp each weekend in period tents; mine even has a wood stove in it for those chilly nights!

First skating experience: Ihe first night I went to the rink, I saw a girl doing the moonwalk on blades. I thought, 'I want to skate like that!' So I bought some rollerblades and 20 years later I still have not been able to master that move!

Helpful Advice to Beginners: If you are interested in skating, buy some protective gear (wrist, elbow, knee guards, maybe a helmet), then go to Playland on adult night and start learning how! After a few weeks, you feel comfortable with it. Then, invest in some skates and you will start improving rather quickly! Hope to see you there!
